More Than a Checkbook: The Power of Non-Cash Gifts
When most people think about supporting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley, they picture writing a check or making an online donation. But some of the most meaningful gifts to our Club never touch a checking account at all.
Non-cash assets, appreciated stock, real estate, business interests, and more, can be powerful ways to support local youth, often with tax advantages that a cash gift simply can’t match.
For many donors, the real appeal isn’t just the tax benefit. It’s the chance to act on a deeply held philanthropic belief or goal using an asset that’s already sitting on the sidelines, without touching the cash flow they rely on for everyday life. A gift of stock, property, or a business interest can turn something that isn’t actively working for the donor into something that changes a young person’s life, all without a dollar coming out of their checking account.
A few examples of non-cash assets donors have used to make an impact:
- Appreciated stock or mutual funds. Donating shares that have grown in value lets a donor avoid capital gains tax while claiming a charitable deduction for the full fair market value.
- Real estate. A vacation home, rental property, or vacant land no longer needed can be gifted directly, or sold with proceeds directed to the Club.
- Closely held business interests. Owners of private businesses can sometimes gift a portion of their company, supporting our programs while managing their own succession planning.
- Retirement account assets. Naming BGCSV as a beneficiary of an IRA or 401(k), or making a Qualified Charitable Distribution if you’re 70 and a half or older, is a simple way to give without touching cash flow.
- Personal property. Art, vehicles, and other valuable items can sometimes be donated and sold to benefit our programs.
Every one of these gifts, no matter the form, helps fund the same thing: safe, enriching spaces where more than 2,000 Sonoma Valley youth learn, grow, and thrive each year.
If you’re considering a gift like this, we’d love to talk with you about what makes sense for your situation. As always, we encourage donors to consult their financial or tax advisor to determine the best approach for their circumstances.
