Multi-Sensory Literacy Program

Literacy
Even if you don’t get it right the first time, keep trying!

Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley is proud to offer our Multi-Sensory Literacy Program, using the Orton Gillingham approach, to the Sonoma Valley community. Engaging three channels of learning; auditory, visual, and kinesthetic, our multi-sensory literacy instruction begins with the smallest unit of sight, sound, and feel, a single letter. The program expands to words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs to link the three channels of learning to strengthen the connections and bridges that enable stronger channels of learning to reinforce and support the weaker channels. This multi-sensory literacy program is now offered at four Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley elementary school locations (Maxwell, El Verano, Flowery, and Sassarini) and lessons are implemented by Literacy Specialists trained in multi-sensory literacy instruction. These specialists receive ongoing training in multi-sensory literacy and developmental stages to create a program that is specifically tailored to each group’s skill level.

Sonoma Valley students are struggling to read at grade level, a common and very important indicator of future academic success. Using the components of; phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension combined with a multi-sensory approach, Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley has created a program that addresses the needs of the young readers and writers in our programs and helps them build skills and confidence.
