Multi-Sensory Literacy Program

Why Literacy? Literacy is a cornerstone of academic success, yet many Sonoma Valley students are not reading at grade level. Literacy is the foundation for lifelong learning and opportunity. Students who can read proficiently are more likely to graduate, pursue higher education, and thrive in their careers. Beyond academics, literacy empowers individuals to navigate the world with confidence, engaging as informed citizens. At Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley, we are committed to ensuring that every child has the chance to unlock their full potential through the power of literacy.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley is proud to offer our Multi-Sensory Literacy Program, engaging three channels of learning; auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. Our multi-sensory literacy instruction begins with the smallest unit of sight, sound, and feel, a single letter. The program expands to words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs to link the three channels of learning to strengthen the connections and bridges that enable stronger channels of learning to reinforce and support the weaker channels.

Our multi-sensory literacy program is offered at four Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley elementary school locations: Maxwell, El Verano, Flowery, and Sassarini. Led by trained Literacy Specialists, the program combines evidence-based techniques with hands-on activities to make learning engaging and effective.

Each week introduces a new concept tailored to the developmental stages and skill levels of the group. For kindergarteners, this might mean focusing on a single letter, such as “M.” Lessons begin with direct instruction and drills, followed by interactive games and activities. Using a multi-sensory approach, students engage their senses to deepen their understanding—writing letters in sand trays, practicing “red words” to recognize sight words, and using physical movement to form letters. By integrating sensory experiences like texture, color, and sound, our specialists create dynamic lessons that help young readers and writers build essential skills with confidence.

This program’s success is rooted in the expertise of our Literacy Specialists, who receive ongoing training in multi-sensory literacy instruction and child development to ensure every student receives the support they need to thrive.
